Kidney from a dog

This dog had a history of polyuria and polydypsia (increased urination and drinking), as well as abnormally high protein in the urine.

Lugol's iodine was applied to the specimen, and revealed numerous black foci.

Lugol's iodine highlights the abnormal substance (see lecture 6).

Question 1: Describe the lesion.

The renal cortex is diffusely pale yellow and has multifocal, fine pitted appearance.

Question 2: What is responsible for the change?

Amyloid (you can't tell what kind)

Question 3: What is the most common form of this disease in companion animals?

Secondary amyloidosis (chronic inflammation leading to increased serum amyloid A).
